AllianceandLeicester.co.uk Review

Alliance and Leicester (www.allianceandleicester.co.uk) were one of the original building societies to transfer to bank status and have gone from strength to strength. They offer the full range of savings, loans and other financial services but their niche area is the mortgage market where they have been particularly successful. Indeed they are seen by many as a barometer for the UK housing market, a market in which they have a very strong market share. While Alliance and Leicester have been under pressure from some of their larger competitors since the transfer from building society to bank, they have reached the heady heights of the FTSE100 Index (the Blue Chip stock market index of the UK) and have regularly attracted a number of admirers from both the UK and overseas. Alliance and Leicester have surprised many in the financial industry with their quick thinking, top quality service and ability to fight it out with the bigger players in the market.

I have been with the Alliance and Leicester for more years than I care to remember and have found them to be very helpful and great value for money. They offer a good range of services and I manage all of my financial affairs through them. What more could I ask for?

I used to have my mortgage with one of their competitors but since I moved to Alliance and Leicester the difference has been amazing. I hit some financial trouble last year and they were very supportive in helping me through what was a very difficult time. I would recommend the company to anyone.

I banked with another of the major UK banks in the past but recently moved to Alliance and Leicester when I moved house and they arranged my mortgage. The transfer of my accounts and loans was seamless and I only had to sign a few pieces of paper. While I did prefer to visit my local bank I now use the online banking service which saves me so much time. IF the online service is down I have used the telephone banking facilities which are just as good with staff always willing to help you and not keep you hanging on.

Hi all, just opened an A&L Premier direct current account and just got all my stuff through the post this week, very prompt in opening the account and it does what it says on the tin, depending on your credit score with the bank you will either get a 3 in 1 or a 2 in 1 VISA debit card…yes a VISA debit card and not an Electron Card, i have just recovered from ID theft and Experian have been working on my behalf for over a year now trying to clear my name, still got a very low credit score but no adverse data so aslong as you dont have any ccj’s or defaults or history of fraud they will likley open an account for you, like I say you will not receive an Electron Card, at minimum like myself they will give you a Full VISA debit crad and a cheque book, after 4 months of wages going in they will give you an overdraft aswell as long as you dont rack up any more adverse on your credit files, for your information they use Experian for there credit search and they will use Experian for an ID check aswell, excellent service from A&L so far and they seem to be S**t hot on security with your money and accounts too. Hope this information is of help to anyone trying to rebuild your credit. Can you find details of their special rates here: specialrateloan.co.uk and betterpriceloans.co.uk

I’ve been with A & L for more than 20 years . But no more . Every week I spend upwards of 2 hours on the phone to this bank , sorting out the latest mess .

I object to being forced to use an 0845 number
I object to being told , whenever I ask , that every Manager in the bank is in a meeting . (Is there any bank that doesn’t do this one)?
And I object to the months it takes to sort anything out

The A&L website and phone system is one of the worst that I’ve ever encountered. I tried to set up an ISA and was told that I couldn’t. I was transferred around for a long time before being told that I could. Actually, you shouldn’t trust banks that don’t even set up an 0800 number for new sales. Having got through that, I’ve tried transferring money in and it seems to have fallen into a black hole. The cumbersome e-mail message system gets poor replies, and if you go through the phone system you get asked for a 12-digit customer ID when they’ve only given you an 8-digit one. This seems shambolic to say the least. There’s no obvious links for help or indeed customer feedback. If I was in their marketing department I’d be worried for my future!

Anyway i sell the house 4 months later yes 4 months later and the same Alliance Leicester would not give the the new buyers a mortgage of the same value because the house had moved ???? the house had settlement in 1936 the Alliance leicester used there own people to survey the house on both mortgages 4 months apart !! ( very funny ) and would not send the new buyer the new survey of which they charged her £280 pounds sterling . I have talked to Alliance till i am Blue in the face they hide double charging interest payments on your accounts ( go check your payments ) I CAN’T TeLL YOU STRONGLY ENOUGH STAY AWAY FROM ALLIANCE LEICESTER .. I’m sorry Alliance and Leicester have the worst service I have come across.

It took 4 months to transfer my ISA to them, despite multiple chasings. Which therefore made a mockery of their increased (temporary rate, note it went down to 0.88% after 1 year)
You cannot close your account in branch
    You cannot close it online

So you have to phone. Transferred from department to department to fax machine until you finally get the “unhelpful dept”.

Ask you every question under the known sun. I think inside leg measurement was the only one they missed off. But in the end they decided because I couldn’t give them my opening balance. I’m sorry I a)can’t remember that long ago and b)didn’t have the paper work with me. Refused to help, refused to put me through to someone else.

When I close this account A&L will not see 1p of my money again.
