Abbey (www.abbey.com) is one of the UK’s biggest banks. This means that they can offer a very competitive range of savings products. These include: the Instant Access Saver, which has a rate of 6.50% AER variable on all your savings from £1,000. (If the balance in your account falls below £1,000 a reduced rate of interest applies to your account - currently 2.75% gross/AER). You get You instant access to your savings via the telephone or in your local branch. There is also a bonus of  1.00% gross p.a./AER for the first 12 months after opening. Abbey are big, they have around 16,000 staff, 705 Abbey branches in the UK, and around 2,500 ATMs. Also they are a very ethical company. They work under a “A Statement of Ethical Principles”. This statment, which is approved by the Abbey Board, and states that all Abbey staff act with integrity, communicating with honesty, treating customers fairly and delivering what they promise. Also all Abbey employee has a responsibility to behave ethically and to raise concerns through the appropriate channels if they become aware that these policies and principles are not being followed.

    Abbey are a good bank. My family and I have used them for over 5 years with no trouble at all. I only use my local brand (watford) and they are very friendly and helpful. The saving rate is very competitive and you be assured that they wont go bust like northern rock.

Abbey is the 6th largest bank in the UK. In 2004, Abbey became part of the Santander Group, the seventh largest bank in the world by profit. Abbey's roots date back to 1849, with the establishment of the National Freehold Land and Building Society. In 1944, it merged with the Abbey Road Building Society to form Abbey National. Then in 1989 they became the first building society to convert to PLC status and to be floated on the London Stock Exchange.
