Britishgas.com Review

British Gas (www.britishgas.co.uk) are the UKs number supplier of energy. In total they have over 15 million customers, and they supply both gas and electricity to millions of UK homes.  They appear to be an ethical energy company and have their own “œenergy and carbon strategy” , in which they claim to be committed to tackling the issues of climate change and sustainability, to minimise the impact they have on the environment. British Gas no longer simply supply gas to UK homes, they also supply electricity, install boilers and central heating, provide home care of gas products, and repair central heating systems.

British gas don’t have the best repuation. I was with them about 5 years ago but switched to another supplier for cost reasons. But the service with the new supplier was even worst, so i switch again, and again the service was poor. So it made me reaslise that British Gas were actually pretty good, not perfect, just pretty good, so i switched back to them about 3 months ago.

For £15 a month a get the homecare service from brithgas (britishgas.co.uk/care). That include unlimited callouts, parts and labour included, etc. Overall, its a bargain.

We have held a British gas Homecare contract for well over 20 years and during this time have very rarely have had to make an emergency call to fix our boiler.

This year like recent years we noticed that the annual boiler safety inspection and service was well overdue. Each year we have noticed that this has slipped (and so have other people we gather) and on initially calling Homecare we were told that they dont normally send out appointments and rely on customers to contact them. We stressed that we have four children/young people in the house and should anything be unsafe with the boiler we were concerned that they/we are all at risk. We were told that we would get a measly £30 compensation for their lapse. This didnt arrive. When we complained officially by telephone about the poor service we were told it was agreed that they had failed to provide an annual inspection and also couldnt see why we hadnt received the £30.

However this year when we rang to Homecare they admitted that they had not provided an annual safety inspection and would arrange it for December. The £30 would also be speeded to us. When the appointment date arrived, we received a phone call to state that the engineers were too busy and that we would have to wait a further month for the inspection. This meant that it was approaching two years since the last safety inspection. When we complained again it was rearranged to 19th December.

Ah, what a relief we thought. To our surprise however, our boiler was declared unsafe. The boiler casing seal (a basic foam sealing strip) had perished and was according to British gas ‘no longer available’ a replacement boiler was recommended. We then faced a nightmare situation of no heating over Christmas which was only a few days away.

We contacted an independent corgi registered engineer and he stated that the seal was in fact readily available; that our particular boiler was a very good model for which there was and likely to be no problem getting spares.

We contacted a Mr Craig McFadeon at 18.46 pm on 19.12.08 at Homecare and he stated that he would contact the engineer who had attended over the weekend and get a recheck done on the availability of the casing seal. We made it clear that we wanted immediate action as we had no heating in the house and four boys to be concerned about, just a few days away from Christmas. We also made the point that British Gas had potentially compromised the safety of our family as the service anniversary was not followed and carbon monoxide could have leaked at any time. Mr McFadeon promised to call back but never did.

We are faced now with a cold bleak Christmas. What we are certainly doing is cancelling our contract with British Gas and transferring our gas supply to another company.
